5 Great Vegetarian Barbecue Specials
Every summer, when temperatures start to soar, people instinctively start to think about Barbecues. What can we say, we love to get outside and eat. It’s important that businesses understand this, especially those that have capacity to sell food such as pubs, schools and community areas. If you have a barbecue in your pub for example, then being prepared to fire it up is vital. However, pleasing everyone can be a slight challenge.
Vegetarians
In the UK vegans and vegetarians account for almost 3% of the population, over 2 million people. Whilst this might be only a small portion of your client footfall providing specialist food for vegetarians might align perfectly with your brand and client base.
Before we start looking at some great suggestions for food remember that when cooking for vegetarians its vital that you avoid cross contamination with meats (check out our griddles and pan supports which are perfect for this).
So here are the top 5 grilled veggies that make our list
Grilled Courgettes (Zucchinis)
A great start is the Grilled courgette, a favourite of vegetarians and healthy eaters the world over. The mild taste and low-calorie nature of the courgette make them suitable for any vegetarian barbecue option and they go great with a salad. 3 to 4 minutes on each side should be enough to brown them off.
Corn on the Cob
Corn on the Cob is a favourite vegetable for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. Depending on how much time you have you may wish to parboil the corn first to soften and then place on the grill, brushed with butter or oil, turning occasionally for a further 5 to ten minutes to ensure it chars nicely.
Barbecued Vegetables with Goat’s Cheese
Grill aubergines, courgettes, tomatoes and spring onions and serve in hot soft tortillas with crumbled goat’s cheese over the top. Add a few basil leaves then drizzle with olive oil.Scrumptious!
Halloumi Cheese
Maybe not one for the vegans but Halloumi is a delicious cheese perfect for grilling. The cheese itself hails from Cyprus and is distinctly known for the fact that it can withstand heat without melting. It’s a fine accompaniment to any barbecue and can simply be sliced and cooked for a couple of minutes on either side until charred.
Vegetable Kebab
Everyone loves a kebab on a barbecue and vegetable kebabs are a delicious alternative to the meaty equivalent. There’s plenty of choice when it comes to picking the veg for the kebab. As a minimum, we would recommend going for cherry tomatoes, peppers, mushrooms, onions, and courgettes. You could add extra flavour with some halloumi cheese as well.
