Time to ditch the traditional wedding breakfast

If the thought of a traditional sit-down meal for your summer wedding fills you with dread – which family members like each other enough to sit together, or which friends should you leave out because it’s all getting much too expensive? – it’s time to ditch the table plans. Think outside the box, and head down the route of wedding barbecue catering.

We all want something a little different or things that are unique to us for our wedding day. And the traditional three-course, sit down dinner is not always the most favoured option these days. For many people it’s far too formal and, if a more relaxed atmosphere is what you’re looking for, then a barbecue may be just the thing.

Celebrate in style

And even the celebrities are doing it. When Julia Roberts married her cameraman Danny Moder, most of the guests thought they were simply attending a Fourth of July barbecue, right until the wedding ceremony started around midnight.

One of the huge advantages of having a barbecue or hog roast for your wedding breakfast is that it won’t make as huge a dent in the wedding budget. Last year, a report from The Telegraph revealed that the average wedding cost reached an all-time high of over £27,000 with catering accounting for around £3,300 of this. So save yourself some more money for the honeymoon, as a barbecue can save a great deal of money, especially if you want a large gathering. The food is tasty and offers a more chilled vibe that your guests cannot fail to be impressed by.

Create your own ‘centrepiece’ with a BBQ

Imagine, your wedding reception in a field with the most amazing view across the countryside, a stately home with an exclusive estate, or a pub hotel with fantastic grounds. Serve yourself; picnic style seating; sit wherever you want – so fantastically laid back and what a lovely, enjoyable summer atmosphere.

And you can go big and confident in the summer, outdoor, rustic barbecue theme too. Use a charming wheelbarrow and fill it with ice and cold drinks for your guests to enjoy. Add your own unique edge – some companies can help you to create your own personalised spice. Use it on your barbecued burgers, pulled pork, or ribs, and give it away to your guests as a personalised wedding favour. Use a paper bag menu with cutlery and napkin inside to add to the country feel. Or, if you want to take things a little more refined, why not try barbecue canapés, or have a heart-shaped stick in your summer wedding cocktail with a recipe created personally for you!

Get creative!

And embrace the non-traditional when you get round to the puddings too. Why not opt for a more trendy option than the usual wedding cake with ice cream sundaes with loveheart, ice cream sprinkles, or individual trifles?

Don’t forget to add in a vegetarian/vegan option and provide plenty of condiments to allow the guests to add their own taste to the delicious barbecued treats. Done with a creative flair, even the condiments can become an attractive table decoration.

So, go with the barbecue, eliminate the stress… and enjoy your day!
